"Isolation within Seniors" by Tatiana Torres

Tatiana is a member of QuaranTeen Pals

During these unprecedented times, life has been difficult for everyone. Isolation has affected everyone I know, especially under my own roof. However, it wasn’t until I met QuaranTeen Pals, that I began to realize how our elders are taking this pandemic. My family doesn’t live by me, which means I don’t get to see my abuelita (grandma) a lot. I understood how much I missed her, but for some reason I didn’t seem to think about how shelter in place has changed her life so much. About a couple months into the pandemic, she began to feel extreme loneliness and since we’re so far, my family felt helpless. She’s in her house all by herself, that was the moment I began to see how privileged I was to have a backyard and a dog to keep me company. Our world is moving so fast and changing, people forget about the elder’s needs, which is the need to have connection with people. That is one of the key reasons I am so delighted to be a part of QuaranTeen Pals. No matter what age, everyone needs some time of communication, and QuaranTeen Pals is doing such. Especially with the minimized visitation limits, letters are a great form of socializing. I am so content to be a part of this because it is definitely going to change so many lives, including my own.
